Q: I have a 1999 Plymouth van and want to start a courier business. Is commercial insurance expensive?
I will be a one man operation until I can pick up some business. I am bonded and will provide notary service in addition to courier and delivery services. I will not be dealing in securities.

A: Yes, if you're NOT going to residential homes, the liability alone on it usually runs about $4,000 a year. If you go to residences, dropping off or picking up, it's closer to $6,000. Plus, as a public carrier, you're subject to PUC filings - and will be REQUIRED to have cargo coverage (there might be a few exceptions in some states that I don't know about). The cargo policy will start at $1,000 including your PUC filing. All this, assuming you're working in under a 25 mile radius, and not crossing a state line. You can't do this on a private passenger policy, as it's excluded under every pp form I've ever seen.

Q: im 18 just passed my driving test would i be able to get insured on commercial insurance for a van?

A: Are you working for a company that requires you to drive for them? If so their insurance should automatically cover you - Any driver driving with the owners consent. But if you are looking to insure a vehicle soley in your name, you better win the lottery first. You could try sitting the advanced driving test, which I think you have to take within a year of passing your original driving test. ( cant think of the name of it off hand, ask a driving instructor) But quite a few insurance companies will give you a huge discount for having this extra certificate.

Q: Do I need to know anything special buying a Step Van?
Before I buy it, I need to know if a big Chevy Step Van would need a special license to drive since it is classified as a commercial van? I can get insurance on it for recreational use though through my agent as I called them ahead of time. Also, can I take it to any normal place to get it inspected? I guess a state would be good to include, I Live in PA!

A: Regular dr. lic. is fine (( what state do you live in at )) probably best to use a garage that has a tall door and a phone call to the inspection place you want to use is easier than the drive to the mechanic store.

Q: Pickup Truck insurance at age 18?
I am 18 and I want to get a Nissan Navara. I have got a quote for the non-commercial versions eg le, se and xe for £1990 which is fine, but I cant get an online quote for the D22 version. Its a 2005 D22 Navara di. It says I have to ring them as they cant give me an online quote. Does anyone know if this model can be insured on normal car insurance as I am under 21 and it will be very difficult and expensive to get commercial or van insurance.

A: Pickup trucks generally do not cost very much in insurance.

Q: Car Insurance Question UK?
i have a car insurance policy with 60% no claims and now wish to buy a campervan........if i keep the camper say 3 years as my only veichle will i be able to transfer my no claims back onto a car ( apparently if i buy a commercial van and keep it 3 years i would lose my no claims discount on a car ).......is a campervan classed as a car when it comes to insurance no claims discount

A: Hello Check with your Insurance Company. I lost Full NCB when I went from Motor Cars to Motor Bikes after 2 years? I lost Full NCB when I changed back again after 2 years. Change of class will loose your NCB after 2 years and is non transferable to the new class or returning to an old one unless than the 2 year limit They are in different Insurance Classes, this is why NCB is non transferable. Q: In NY, am i responsble for the salvage fee of my wrecked vehicle if i don't want to keep the car?
I was rear ended by a commercial van and thrust on top of a crane. At the time of the accident my vehicle and teh vehicle in front of me were not in motion. Unfortunatley I did nt have Full coverage/gap insurance.

A: If you have not already done so, contact the at fault drivers insurance company immediately. Your vehicle is incurring storage charges if it is sitting in a tow yard. They may not cover you for all of the charges. The insurance company will determine if your vehicle is a total loss. If so, they will offer you the Actual Cash Value of the vehicle, not the replacement cost. If you do not want to keep the vehicle, they will not deduct the salvage from the settlement, and they should include sales tax. If you keep the vehicle, they will deduct the salvage from the ACV.

Q: I barely hit a new Chrysler 300 with my van leaving a tiny white smudge........?
I did not even know I hit the car until the owner informed me. It was a tiny white smudge on the bumper of her car. I offered to buff it out for her but she insisted on getting an estimate which was 800 dollars. Since then I have agreed to pay the amount in payments of 100 dollars a week. Upon last payment i noticed that the smudge was gone. The husband informed me that he used a buffer to remove it. They still want the 800 dollars. The reason I agreed to pay out of pocket is because the van is a commercial vehicle with high enough insurance now. What should I do? Continue to pay the remaining 600 dollars even though the repair only cost them a buffer and compound.

A: pay them, you admitted in a public forum that it was your fault, suing them after agreeing to pay isnt going to work

Q: Do You Know Anyone In The Delivery/Courier Service Business?
I live in Houston, TX and I plan on purchasing a delivery cargo van or box truck. My goal is to deliver medium sized goods to commercial businesses and work as an independent contractor. My quesion is whether or not you or someone you may know does this for a living. If so, do you make good money and is it profitable? Additionally, I am aware of the fuel costs, insurance costs, etc associated with this business. Thanks.

A: Im in the same situation I also live in Houston Tx and also starting my own hot shot service. It is very profitable if you get the right jobs that will keep you busy and you keep them happy. I know from other people in the business that make very good money also. Hope everything works out great and dont give up!

Q: Auto Accident Settlement?
I was involved in an auto accident in August of which I was not at fault. I was hit by a commercial van with a lapsed policy. The claim is against my Insurance Co. Uninsured Motorist Policy which has a cap of $50,000. My insurance Co. has taken care of the damage to my vehicle as well as PIP of 2,500 towards my medical cost. I suffered a lumbar herniated disc as well as "soft tissue injury" to my mid-back and neck. Excluding my PIP my medical cost amounted to 10,500 including MRI's and Xrays. I decided from the beginning to not get a lawyer. When I felt I did not need continous treatment I called my insurance co. to settle. The initial offer was 7,500 to settle and by the time we were getting of the phone it was raised t0 10,000. This still did not cover my medical or any future medical cost. I spoke with them today and they offered 11,000 and said it was there max offer. Again, I said no that it did not cover me at all for future treatments. BTW I was treated for 3 months for my injuries and I am still in a lot of pain if I move the wrong way or try to lift things. Since the accident I am not able to do things I was able to do prior. In the last month I have spent 1,000 to make repairs to my home I would have done my self. ***** My questions: Is this a fair offer? If not what would be a fair counter? Or should I just get a lawyer? I am not looking to get rich! I know this was an accident. However, I do not want to pay out of pocket for future treatment or just that fact I can't do what I used to. When the say final offer or the max for my claim is that true?

A: Richard Q, I recommend an online insurance quote. It's free and generally hassle free. http://www.autoadviceonline.com/Auto-Insurance-Quote.html

A: You are looking at a very profitable business if you line yourself up with the right people and pick the niche of the business you will be most comfortable in. I have been in the Courier business for more than 18 years and have seen it all. The main issues in today's business environment are getting good customers and keeping your fuel costs under control. You have a van, but who needs it? Do you want to work for a local or National Company? How many hours will you be available? You still have many questions to ask yourself before you are truly ready to market your services. But it can be done and quickly. I have more ideas at my Blog http://jims-ideas.blogspot.com if care to take a look.

Q: Liability for a car accident?
My daughter worked for a transport co. ( vans and buses) July 8, 2008 the owner of the company, took the last transport vehicle for her personal uses, and in turn gave my daughter gas money to put gas in my car, requesting her to take my car and go pick up the companies 3 pm client, ( without my permission) on the way there my daughter had a car accident and totaled my car and the car she hit... People in the other car did get injured... I contacted my insurance company, only to find out that my insurance had just lapsed, and I was told by my insurance company they would not have covered the accident anyway, because the car was being used for commercial use at the time of the accident... Now it seems as if I am liable... The company will take no resposibility, as a matter of fact as of yesterday ( 20 days after the accident) the company has layed my daughter off... With no real explaination... Please help me with some directional answers Thanks... I live in Delaware

A: You, your daughter, and the company are all liable. You are liable as the owner of the vehicle. She is liable as she was driving it. Her employer is liable as she was acting within the terms of her employment and performing her ordinarily assigned duties at the direction of her employer. You need a lawyer. Get one. NOW!
