Q: Will a US motorcycle license allow you to drive a motorcycle in the UK? How does the insurance work?
I want to buy and ride a motorcycle in the UK without getting a UK motorcycle license. (I have a US one though)

A: This is the link to our DVLA (the authority that governs drivers & vehicle licencing in the UK) : http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/DrivingInGbOnAForeignLicence/DG_4022561 You will see that you basically have 12 months unless you take steps to obtain a UK licence during that period. Insurance is obligatory in the UK. The minimum legally acceptable cover is "third party", which covers damage you may cause to someone else's property, though you may have difficulty finding an insurance company offering that level of cover. Most start with "third party fire and theft", which offers the same cover for other people's property, plus fire and theft cover for your own vehicle. Better is "fully comprehensive", which adds on damage to your own vehicle and naturally costs more. It's a serious offence not to have insurance cover in force to cover your use of that vehicle, and in some areas uninsured vehicles are seized and crushed as well. Insurance cover is based on the user, i.e. your age, experience etc, your vehicle i.e. make, model, performance etc, and other factors, including where you live, whether the vehicle's garaged, alarmed etc. You buy it by contacting one of the many companies offering motor/motorcycle insurance.

Q: Motorcycle insurance in the UK?
My husband has just brought a new bike, a Suzuki UH125 Bergman. What is the best and cheapest motorcycle insurance??

A: I used ebike last time I changed mine. Shop around and see what sort of deal you can get. A few of my friends have used http://www.bikingneeds.com/?_$ja=tsid:1680 with good reports.

Q: Motorcycle Insurance?
I am about to buy a 125cc motorbike in the UK. m in my late 20's and have a secure job. What is a good insurance company to deal with and what sort of quote should i be expecting? I have the usual security for my bike, smartwater, thatcham approved chain and disc brake lock. The best quote I got online on a CBR125 was £450. Is that about right or is thre anyone out there paying a lot less, for fire, theft and 3rd party insurance

A: http://www.bennetts.co.uk/ http://www.biketeam.co.uk/ http://www.motorcycle-insurance-uk.com/ http://www.directchoice.co.uk/ All specific to the UK. Have a look.

Q: Pillion passenger insurance uk?
hey does anyone know if pillion passenger insurance is a legal requirement on a motorcycle. I passed my test a year ago, and I need to take a passenger in a few days, but only have third party insurance. Is it technically illegal to carry one without the insurance? and what are the chances of getting caught on a 7 mile journey in the country? help pleasee :)

A: Are you 100% it doesn't cover passenger liability ? I was under the impression that UK policies had to in order to comply with the Road Traffic Act (RTA). Please DO NOT take my word for it, but it's definitley worth checking with your insurer if you haven't done so as I'm 95% sure that it does. Edit ------------------------- I've just re read the Act and my confidence factor that passengers are covered (though not their property) under any UK motor policy by law is now up to about 99%, BUT please check, this is too serious an issue for you not to.

Q: motorcycle insurance in italy?
i will be moving to rome next month and i need to know how i should go about getting my vespa insured. im getting my bike trucked to me and i want to ride the bike. does anyone know about insurance etc. there. i only hold a UK provisional licence. have completed my CBT but not sure if this will be valid to ride in Italy or not. please help!!! :) thanks

A: Call into a local insurance office - third party insurance is compulsory Your UK provisional licence is not valid at all as a resident, it would be if it was a full licence, but then only for 3 months - a full licence can be exchanged free of charge for an Italian one.. You will have to apply for an Italian licence. Crash helmet compulsory Update - if you have a current no claims bonus, it will be recognised by the Italian insurers (you may have to get it translated) You have 3 months from your date of arrival to obtain an Italian registration. To get this you will require 2 documents. First a VAT receipt that proves you have paid your VAT, if not you could be liable for import duty Second a Certificate of Conformity that can only be obtained from either the manufacturers of your bike OR the importers. This document MUST be in Italian.

Q: About Motorbike Insurance ... UK?

Adam Yeah thanks, i know about named drivers but you've clarified for me. thank you

Q: Motorcycle- £6000. Insurance £300. Where's the catch?
Hi! I have my Direct Access test booked and a deposit set down for a Harley Davidson 883 Sportster. The bike costs a fraction under £6000. My insurance is £300. That's £6900 for the bike test, the bike itself and a year's insurance. Where's the catch? This all seems awfully cheap for a new UK rider! What are fuel costs (c.8 miles a day) and parts likely to cost on this bike? After 5 years in cars, I cannot believe biking is this cheap! Am I missing something?!

A: I dont think thats an unreasonably low bike cost, or insurance rate, although you do seem to have gotten a good deal. Keep up with the bikes maintenence and it shouldn't cost too much in repairs. That bike should get around 50-60miles per gallon, so that shouldnt be an issue. As for catches, all you really have to think about is your vulnerability on the road, and riding in rain, and other bad weather depending on where you live. Also, you cannot carry as many passengers, or as much luggage on a bike if that matters.

Q: Motorcycle accident! Uk only?
My husband was involved in a motorcycle accident, when he was knocked off by a disqualified driver, lucky enough he was arrested and awaits court action. And also lucky that the vehicle was insured (dont ask me how). Anyways, my husband has third party insurance, but when telling the insurance company (ebike) they did not have no interest and passed it on to Angel Assistance, who were even more a waste of time. We told Angel assistance and ebike that we had our own solicitor dealing with personal injuries, as my husband substained a dislocated and fractured wrist and minor cuts and bruises. But they would not deal with the issue of the motorcycle, claiming this off road, and claiming money back from the motorcycle. But nope was not interested. So at the moment, we have not got a clue what is going on....... Has anyone had the same experience? Whats the best way of dealing with this?

A: I would doubt if his vehicle was in fact insured as he was a disqualified driver that would annul his insurance I believe the insurance companies have some sort of uninsured drivers section that deals with claims against uninsured drivers I know that this might be a bad time to say but for the little difference between third party and fully comp its just not worth taking the risk with third party as if your husband had been insured fully comp his own insurance would have covered all his costs including any legal costs for uninsured losses Never mind he will know the next time. Did you know that there are more than one million uninsured drivers on the UK roads!!

Q: when renting a motorcycle in Thailand do you need a motorbike license? and do you need to get insurance?
I'm 19 and have a UK driving license

A: No you dont nead a licence, but if you dont have one and you have an accident no matter whos fault it is YOU will be liable and as a foreigner you will have to pay a lot of money if you hit a Thai person. 200 baht for not wearing a helmit, and 200 baht for no licence at the police stop. If police stop you just tell them you left it at home. Thai motor bike rentor want you to fall off or damage the're bike so you have to PAY lol so be carefull and keep your eyes in the back of your head coz the're aint no road rules in Thailand. Beautiful place though and if your a good boy beautiful people too. If police stop you just smile and be polite and call the officer pee, respect for older or higher status.

Q: can anybody recomend an insurance company that will insure ALL of my vehicles on 1 policy, in the UK?
we have between the two of us two cars and a motorcycle and i was just wondering if there are any companys that have a family fleet policy, we will only ever be using 2 of the vehicles at any one time, recomendations please,

A: i saw an advert for 'admiral' saying they do something like that....

Q: what is a full power import motorcycle?
I have seen a GSXR 600 that is described as being a full power import motorcycle. Does this mean that you have to declare it as an import when getting insurance and would this affect the premium as opposed to a UK bike? Whats everyones views on this type of import?

A: Some bikes are restricted in the factory so that new riders can ride them legally. A full power bike is one that has either been redistricted for a full licence rider, or was not restricted in the first place. If you are not required to ride a restricted motorcycle, then don't give it a second thought, It doesn't matter.

Q: Motorcycle accident - is it worth a claim?
Hi, i'll precise the story.... I dropped my bike at a stall on my drive!! I somehow got underneath the engine with my hand and crushed the palm bones. Agony. This was 10 days ago now, but now thought about insurance losses! I'm self employed as a driver, so wont be able to work for 12 weeks, unpaid. Does my motorcycle insurance cover any losses? It's fully comp in the uk. I've never claimed for anything in 23 years, with a perfect history. The bike is undamaged, it is me who got hurt, including my pride, as it was the 1st time in my life that I have dropped a motorcycle!!

A: My experience with motorcycle insurance is they don't cover jack crap of the injuries for the owner of the bike. I had the best policy I could purchase from Allstate and they only cover up to $5,000 of medical expenses. Shit that didn't even cover the ambulance and emergency room visit let alone the three surgeries over the next year and no work for 12 months.

A: You need a local, independent agent who will do this. Pocket bikes are a niche market, and I don't know of any companies who do them, who will write directly for an insured, bypassing an agent. You can find an independent agent near you at www.iiaa.org.
