Q: How much automobile liability insurance is enough - $1 or $2 millions?
My insurance has "strongly recommend" that I should increase my automile liability insurance from $1 million to $2 million, although I have not involved in any accidents. I wonder if that is because of the possible increase of accident compensation these days. Do you think that the increase of liability insurance is necessary?

A: I carry $300,000 plus an umbrella policy (as recommended above) to $1 million. I think this is probably sufficient.

Q: What does automobile liability insurance cover?
Yesterday, my family had a post family reunion get together. Around 1 am I had passed out in the backseat of my car in my grandmother's driveway (where the party was). My cousin proceeded, without having asked my permission, to crank the car and drive it around the yard. In route, he side swiped a tree causing close to four thousand dollars worth of damage to my vehicle. Will his liability insurance cover his damages to my car?

A: This has happened to many times in different places. 1st Fault .... Where were the Keys ...? Permission or not if the keys were in the ingition your at fault, 50% You will have to take him to court to get him to pay ?... Yes if he doesn't want to make it right. 3 parts to Policys His insurance does NOT cover him to drive another vehicle under Liability only... Liability only covers him Driving the car he has insurance on. Next if you have Full coverage or Liability with Uninsured underinsured your company will pay and will fight for you if you have your Cousin's insurance information... If you both have the same Company coverage and He has Full coverage and you have full coverage they will work it out most likely...

Q: How much is Budget's "Mexican Automobile Liability Insurance"?
im renting soon and i need to go to mexico, budget offers this type of insurance but im quite scared to ask... i just need to go by the border.. what will happen if i dont get the insurance and actually drive to mexico?? im scared,, but im really daring lol. thanks

A: Your personal automobile policy will not provide coverage for you in Mexico. Therefore, you would be uninsured if you don't take out Budget's mexican insurance. If you plan on going into Mexico - buy the insurance.

Q: If you own an automobile in NH, do you need to have liability insurance?
I was hit by a driver from NH who claimed that New Hampshire does not require liability insurance.

A: All states require insurance...liability at a minimum. there are provisions where if a person is wealthy enough they can do what is knowsn as slef insured...but unless they have that then they musht have insurance. if they are self insured then you will probably have to sue them

Q: Bodily injury liability vs. Automobile medical payments insurance?
What is the diff. between these two? let say, a minor injuries to passengers in my car would be covered by which policy?

A: Both are injury coverages. Both pay for passengers in the covered vehicle Both pay for medical bills up to the policy limit BI Liability coverage: Coverage limit is usually expressed as a fraction - such as 25/50. This means the most that any one person can collect for their injury (regardless of severity) is 25,000. The most that can be paid for all injuries in 1 accident is 50,000. BI liability pays for injuries that result from your negligence. In essence - you did something wrong that caused them to be hurt. You can't be liable to yourself. That means, an at fault driver can not collect under this coverage. This coverage will pay medical bills, lost wages, loss of consortium, pain and suffering. Medical Payments coverage is usually expressed as a set amount - such as 1000 or 5000 per person. This coverage pays only for medical bills up to the policy limit. This coverage pays regardless of fault. It will also pay if you are a pedestrian and are struck by another vehicle. Here's an example of how the coverages work - Joe is driving. Sally, Mary and Bob are passengers in his vehicle. Joe loses control of his car and hits a tree. All 4 occupants of the car are injured. Joe - would be able to make a claim under Medical Payments for his medical bills (up to the policy limit). He can Not make a claim against the bi liability. His negligence caused the accident and he can't be liable to himself. His claim is Med Pay only. Sally, Mary and Bob would be able to make a claim against the policies Medical Payments coverage And the bi liability coverage. Hope this helps.

Q: What are the exact requirements in the state of California on Auto Liability Insurance?
where would I find a copy of the California State laws on Automobile Insurance requirements?

A: The answer "shjf47" gave you is the correct minimum automobile insurance requirements in the State of California. Consider, however, that even a modest accident will eat up all of this liability coverage, and could place any assets you have in jeopardy. To be even remotely safe you should carry 100,000/300,000/50,000 coverage (this is the amounts most finance companies, and rental agreements require). It really doesn't cost that much more, and it protects your assets better. California's automobile laws can be found as a sub-section of the California Vehicle Code which you can find a link to at "www.dmv.ca.gov."

Q: Should the Federal Government provide Universal Car Insurance?
I just had a thought. Since many want the government to provide health insurance to those who cannot afford or will not purchase it, shouldn't the government extend it's insurance business to automobile liability insurance? Supporters say it's heartless and inhumane not to offer health insurance to those who cannot afford it, but isn't it so with car insurance as well? How many people are not able to drive to work because they afford insurance? How many illegal aliens are driving around uninsured because they don't have universal car insurance? What happens if they causse an accident and have no insurance? Isn't it the same thing?

A: Some states get involved to help people get insurance who otherwise couldn't afford it. Here in California, as I'm sure elsewhere, between 1/3 and 1/4 of all drivers don't have insurance. This is even though you can't renew your driver's license or your car registration without proving that you have insurance. One plan that's been suggested is to put a 10-cent tax per gallon on gas, and this would give everyone a minimum liability coverage. If you wanted more coverage, or collision or comprehensive, you could buy it, but it would be cheaper because you wouldn't need 'uninsured motorist' protection. The article I read about this showed how this system would actually be better for everyone! It also suggested that visitors to the state who had their own insurance could keep track of their gas purchases and apply for a refund when they left (but I doubt many people would do that). Health insurance is different from car insurance, though. When 45 million Americans simply can't afford health insurance, it's time for the govt. to step in. The comparison to car insurance is not a good one. I am diabetic and my wife has a kidney transplant, and we are both middle-aged. If we had to buy our own insurance we simply couldn't afford it. If one of us didn't have a job that carried insurance, we would have to go on welfare because our insurance would cost most of what we make! We have gotten quotes as high as $4500/mo. for both of us. Maybe you think we just don't -deserve- insurance.

Q: how much liability should one get on auto insurance ?
How does one determine the appropriate liability insurance to get on an automobile?

A: Enough to protect all of your assets plus a year or two of projected income. This would include things like your house. Fortunately, the cost of liability insurance is quite low. Getting the maximum coverage offered is pretty cheap. Physical damage coverage for your own vehicles is *much* more expensive.

Q: why do insurance companies get away with charging hefty premiums but when it comes time to pay up, they don't?
they get legislators to approve these premiums and get them to make laws requiring automobile liability insurance, while selling this to the public vote as a decrease in premium because of more insureds, yet when an accident occurs, they raise the premium or drop you. what about the katrina victims that have been paying homeowners and/or flood insurance for 30+ years and now that it's time for the insurance company to produce the service that we pay so dearly for, the consumer gets jacked! why are they allowed to get away with all of this when they are supposedly regualated by their state's insurance commission?

A: They collect enough premium to cover any losses they EXPECT to have. When disasters like Katrina occur, they have to pay millions of dollars to cover the claims... they have to raise their prices because of their claims history. They will still continue to have their "normal" claims, but now they have millions in claims that never could have been predicted. Also, homeowners insurance does not cover floods, you have to have flood insurance which is sold separately. Not sure if a hurricane is covered under this situation, they can not be predicted enough in advance. If someone told you there was going to be a hurricane 3 years from now, you'd obviously buy the insurance.. but would you carry it for the whole 3 years, or just when you knew the hurricane was about to hit??

Q: What auto insurance offices offer reduced cost auto insurance program in the San Fernando Valley?
Details below if you do not know which one I am referring to? I'm not talking about the cliche "low cost auto insurance" that is available to everyone. etc...I'm talking about a specific plan offered by the state of California available at some insurance offices for low income individuals. I found one office with it, it isn't close enough, does anyone know of any more offices ? "The California Low Cost Automobile Insurance Program (LCA): The California Low Cost Automobile Insurance Pilot Program, created in 1999, established a low-cost automobile insurance policy for residents of Los Angeles County and the City and County of San Francisco. California Law requires that all drivers be insured. However, too many low-income drivers remain uninsured because the costs of standard auto insurance premiums are beyond their financial reach. The program’s purpose is to provide low-cost automobile liability insurance to good drivers who demonstrate financial need.

A: It's my understanding that the program is only available to those that are certifiably below the poverty level and the liability limits are reduced even lower than what is normally required by the State of California. I'm a Texas agent but have a lot of friends that are agents or brokers in CA and they tell me that they do not HAVE to sell it and choose NOT to since it IS a low premium product (hence low commission to them) and they cannot charge any broker fee. Irregardless of how far the agent that you FOUND that WILL write the program, you may be compelled to use them. It's either that or ask around to someone you know that might have the program - perhaps they can point you in the right direction. You might also contact your Department of Insurance in Sacramento for a list of qualified agents. Good luck and I hope this helps!

Liability - $1,000,000 Commercial General Liability-$5,000,000 Automobile Ability -$1,000,000 PS: I am en employee and I am being charged by my employer. $2.00 for every hour I work. i.e. almost $320-$350/month. -> $4000/year. I just wanted to know if I am being cheated or it it really costs so much. My employer says, he is distributing the cost of teh above insurance between 8 people and it turns out to be $4000/ year/person. Thanks.

A: What your employer is doing is illegal!!! He is NOT an insurance broker. He can not 'collect premium' from parties that have no interest in the policy! If he, as the employer, takes out coverage.......HE is the one who is supposed to pay it. Wow - I'm surprised no one have ever reported him! Usually, you hear of manufacturers passing on increased insurance premiums to their CONSUMERS....NOT their employees. Call your department of insurance. Call the State Fraud Examiners. Call someone. That is just so wrong!

Q: I need $10 million of proffesional/personal liabilty insurance.?
I may need a $10 million of proffesional liabilty insurance. I'm a salesman and I got a dui/dwi. The company I work for is afraid since the automobile and buisness liability insurance is tied together that if they won't insure me for driving the company vehicals, they won't insure me for the $10 million of proffesional liabilty insurance needed to get into steel mills. I sell air-conditioning to steel mills in the midwest, usa. I do not work on or repair the air-conditiong. I measure the space and design systems, but I need to get into the mills to do my job. I may not need that much to do my job. The people I work for are torn between letting the insurance company find out on there own, the policy needs renewed befor 4-1-08. Or calling them and seeing what the options are ? So if anyone has any input let me know. Thanks

A: Personal and professional are two different policies, you know. Driving cars is auto liability, different from both personal AND professional liability. General liability is different, too. Yep, measuring the space and designing systems is a professional liability exposure. Going into steel mills, it's going to cost A LOT. The people you work for are probably just going to let you go. That's the cheap way out for them. It's easier to get a new salesperson than it is to fight the insurance companies, and double their premiums for the whole fleet. And no mill is going to let you on premises, unless you have professional, general, nonowned and owned auto liability coverages. Trust me, they'll run the mvr's 70 days before the renewal, and either double the premiums for the whole fleet, or more likely, require an operator exclusion form FOR YOU. And also trust me, you're not going to be able to afford to buy these coverages yourself. You're not talking about a $250 policy here, you're talking about five or six figures, for professional liability in a steel mill.

Q: the DMV people scare me so Im turning to Yahoo answers...?
I live in the state of North Carolina, and to get my level 2 limited provisional license the DVM says I need proof that I completed 30 hours of in class driving instruction (drivers ed). Ok, well I did that a year ago to get my permit, but I can't remember if they kept the paper I got saying I completed drivers ed or if they gave it back (I lost it if they did) but anyways, I can get my "license" tomorrow but I need this proof!! I lost my permit too and I don't know what I can get as far as proof for that goes... wouldn't they usually use the permit as proof and if so wouldn't they have it in records on the computer that I got my permit last year (It expired about 2 days ago...)? Also, my mom says I need HEALTH insurance (which I don't have) but the DMV website says "automobile liability insurance" (which I do have...to an extent) which insurance is it? and if im getting my provisional wouldn't the insurance card be OK if it was in my moms name and not mine, because its her car...?

A: As respects to proof of 30 hours you should be able to get a copy of this from the school where you took the instruction. The DMV has a record of your permit. You need to call them to see if you need to renew the permit. Chances are you will have to renew it.Since your mom has insurance on her car you already have the auto liability insurance. The insurance follows the car, not the driver. Health insurance is nice to have but it is not required for a drivers license.r
